Gerald Genta (1931-2011), the outstanding watch designer known as the “Picasso of watches” designed more than 100.000 models during his lifetime.
His wife and business partner, Evelyne, who manages his estate, has released 100 [from among 3000] unseen original drawings for auction by Sotheby’s in Geneva (Feb 2022), Hong Kong (March 2022) and New York City (April 2022).
The sale which which will take place in 2022, holds a strong signification as it will mark the 50th anniversary of the Royal Oak which he designed in 1970 for Audemars Piguet.
Genta designed several legendary timepieces in addition to the Royal Oak such as:
The Polerouter in 1954 for Universal to commemorate the historic flight from Copenhagen to Los Angeles via the North Pole.
The Constellation for Omega in 1959
The Nautilus for Patek Philippe in 1976 amongst many others.
This is an incredible opportunity for watch collectors to get their hands on an original Genta design, after all who doesn’t want to own a work from one of the most prolific watch designers of all times?
We have a feeling that the sketch of the original Royal Oak will generate the most interest in light of the model’s 50th anniversary.
